when nature writing sucks

Brendan Gill wrote about architecture: “Even the most sympathetic feats of restoration carry the taint of an embalmment.” I’d argue that restoring damaged places – even if the restoration limits itself to the page – carries that same risk. “Nature writing” is far too often just an elegy for what’s been lost.
But the place is still there. Isn’t it?
